On February 2, with the "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM cutterhead slowly starting to rotate at the working face of the No. 8 inspection and traffic tunnel of the Bid 4 of the Yinchang-to-Hanjiang River Diversion Project, the first TBM of the Yinchang-to-Hanjiang River Diversion Project officially started excavation in Baokang County, Hubei Province, marking the project's entry into a new phase of TBM tunnel excavation.
On December 2, with the "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM cutterhead slowly starting to rotate at the working face of the No. 8 inspection and traffic tunnel of Package 4 of the Yinjiaobohan Project, the first TBM of the Yinjiaobohan Project officially started excavation in Baokang County, Hubei Province, marking the entry of the Yinjiaobohan Project into a new stage of TBM tunnel excavation construction.
The Yinjiaobohan Project is a follow-up water source project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's middle route, connecting the Three Gorges Project and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, two major national projects. It will divert water from the Three Gorges Reservoir on the Yangtze River into the Han River downstream of the Danjiangkou Reservoir. Upon completion, the project will significantly enhance the water supply capacity and guarantee rate of the Phase I project of the middle route, significantly improve the water resource allocation capacity of the Han River Basin and the region, and create conditions for the future water diversion scale of the Yinhanjiwei Project.
China's South-to-North Water Diversion Group is fully committed to building a "safe, high-quality, green, intelligent, and transparent" Yinjiaobohan Project. It strictly implements the lifelong responsibility system for engineering construction quality, deeply promotes comprehensive quality management, actively promotes standardized construction, adheres to the principles of first-piece evaluation, trial implementation, and sample guidance, vigorously promotes "mechanization replacing manpower, automation reducing manpower, and intelligence unmanned," and focuses on enhancing technological leadership and support, implementing the application of major equipment and facilities.
The "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM is the first hard rock tunnel boring machine put into operation for the Yinjiaobohan Project of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project's middle route. It is also the largest diameter single-shield hard rock tunnel boring machine currently used in water diversion tunnel projects in China, with a digging diameter of 12.23 meters, a total length of about 160 meters, and a weight of about 2800 tons. The equipment is equipped with a comprehensive geological prediction system, a cutter wear and condition monitoring system, and a shield jamming early warning and assessment system, enabling it to effectively cope with complex geological conditions such as large burial depth, high external water pressure, sudden mud and water inrush, and large deformation of soft rock along the route. At the same time, this equipment has innovatively broken through the synchronous pushing and splicing technology, enabling simultaneous tunnel excavation and segment assembly, which can improve construction efficiency by 20% to 40%.
To ensure the timely excavation of the TBM, China's South-to-North Water Diversion Group Jianghan Water Network Construction and Development Co., Ltd. and the construction unit set three key targets: assembly, stepping, and starting. They gathered expert resources, formulated assessment plans, implemented a traffic light early warning mechanism, and solidly promoted the work of TBM stepping mechanism, front shield, middle shield, rear shield, cutterhead welding, and assembly. It is understood that the "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM will advance at an average monthly rate of 225 meters and is expected to complete its excavation mission by the end of 2029.
The successful launch of the first "Jianghan Pioneer" TBM has set a benchmark for the transition of construction for the other nine TBMs along the entire project line, representing a significant practical achievement in the ultra-large diameter TBM excavation of long-distance pressurized water diversion tunnels in China. The second TBM, "Jianghan Ping'an," is planned to be assembled by the end of February next year, the third TBM, "Jianghan Kaituo," is being assembled, and the fourth TBM, "Jianghan Xinshiqi," is undergoing machine component transportation. The construction of the Yinjiaobohan Project is accelerating comprehensively.
As of December 2, the main tunnel excavation of the Yinjiaobohan Project has exceeded 3.3 kilometers, and the total excavation of branch tunnels along the route has exceeded 14.9 kilometers. Four of the 10 TBM units have completed offline acceptance, and two more will complete offline acceptance by the end of this year.
